‘Do not underestimate the Apprenticeship experience’ – Hayley Newcombe – Level 3 IT Apprentice

Hayley - Apprenticeship Picture...2

An up and coming Apprentice from the Midlands has urged other young people to follow her lead and to make the most of the life changing opportunity that an Apprenticeship offers.

Hayley Newcombe from the 3aaa Academy in Birmingham started an IT Apprenticeship earlier this year after attending university for three months and decided that this route wasn’t for her. “I do not regret this decision at all. The topics we have studied have been exactly what I’d hoped, covering a wide range of IT and I have met some lovely people at the academy which has made my experience even better and helped my confidence grow”. said Hayley.

Many young people are led to believe that the common route of Sixth form and University is the only path to a successful career. Hayley disagrees with this assumption stating “I have always had a passion for IT but was looking to gain some work based experience whilst also achieving my qualifications. Apprenticeships really aren’t given as much credit as they deserve”.

Soon after starting her qualification with the 3aaa team, Hayley found the job that was perfect for her as she continued her Apprenticeship journey. Hall’s Garden Supplies, based in Sutton Coldfield were on the lookout for young, enthusiastic people to help transform their business.

With the help of the 3aaa team, Hayley started her employment at Hall’s which signalled the beginning of an exciting partnership. David Coton from Hall’s Garden Supplies echoed this “Hayley has fitted into our organization very well and it already feels like she has been with us for a long time although in reality it has only been a few months. Hayley has shown great enthusiasm, willingness to learn and passion when it come to her job. She has learnt a lot about how our business works and how important it is to engage both online and offline with both colleagues and customers in order to success in a business environment”.

During her time in the work place, Hayley is learning about a range of different tasks that will help her progress within the career of her dreams, combining these skills with the valuable technical knowledge that she is learning within the Academy.

Another aspect of her Apprenticeship journey so far that Hayley has found valuable is the inspirational Hollowford trip. At the start of their Apprenticeships, the 3aaa Apprentices are given the opportunity to go on a further induction where they will take part in a number of entertaining activities aimed at growing key skills such as team work, leadership and communication. Hayley said “The Hollowford trip was brilliant. I loved my time there and it was definitely worth doing”.

‘Providing inspiration and support to kick start your dream career’ – Liam Humphries – Level 3 Social Media and Digital Marketing Apprentice

DSCN0054

A talented young Apprentice from the West Midlands has spoken about how 3aaa inspired him and helped to kick start his dream career in a time of major uncertainty and concern in his career.

It is a worrying time for many young people when they leave school as they are often unsure of the options available to them and where to go next in search of that life changing opportunity.

Liam Humphries of Heath Hayes chose 3aaa and the Apprenticeship route after originally deciding to go to university. Liam said “I firstly went to university to gain a degree in BA Product Design. Since school I wanted to do this and that was all I wanted to do as a job. I also did have an interest in IT but not as much as product design. When I got to university I found out it wasn’t what I thought it was. The course wasn’t right and I was really disappointed in what I had signed myself up for. I lasted 3 months at university, trying to wait to see if it would get better. I then stumbled upon a job opportunity at the South Staffs College with 3aaa.”

He added “I’m now very happy within my job. I have a new found love for IT and marketing because of this job. I also get a lot of satisfaction out of helping clients do well. We are looking to develop and grow the business further within the next 12-24 months.”

Liam is currently part way through his Apprenticeship with Online Marketing Surgery Ltd, based in Stonall in the West Midlands and combines his employment by attending his local Academy, where he learns all of the technical knowledge to compliment the skills that he learns within the work place.

It is very common in young people between the ages of 16 – 23 to have huge concerns about their careers and futures and many of these young people struggle to find this inspiration and support.

Liam speaks very positively about Apprenticeships and how this life changing opportunity helped to conquer these worries “I did have a period where I was worried about my career, that’s why I got myself out there. Self-motivation at this point was at an all-time high because I wasn’t just going to be a doll dosser. Although I had no real experience within Marketing or an office job I found it different to what I was used to. I had help from the Tamworth academy to give me the knowledge to go into an interview and be successful. The 3aaa team supported me every step of the way and helped teach me the personal skills as well as the necessary technical skills to kick start my career”

3aaa lead the way with outstanding training!

Finalist: Peter Marples and Di McEvoy-Robinson (3AAA) – Helping school-leavers pick up first job

Pete and Di at opening of Derby

Before setting up their Derby-based training firm, Peter Marples and Di McEvoy-Robinson had already enjoyed success in their respective fields.

Peter was in the financial sector, while Di was in education. In 2007, they joined forces to set up Aspire, Achieve, Advance.

More commonly known as 3AAA, the business helps school-leavers get their first job in their chosen career path – coupled with structured training and support.

Over the past three years alone, 3AAA has engaged with more than 3,000 young people.

The tireless work of Peter and Di has seen 3AAA become the fastest-growing provider of apprenticeships for people aged 16 to 24. It has also established 22 training academies nationwide, with another four to open in July.

In particular, 3AAA has expertise in developing IT and accountancy apprentices, providing businesses with talented young, work-ready individuals.

Together, Peter and Di have formed an effective partnership, driving their business forward with their passion for helping young people and working to produce the workforce of the future.

From stores to stars, Alan sets up 3aaa’s Bristol Academy!

As featured in the Bristol Post: A former store manager has opened a new apprenticeship academy in the city to train young people to work in the technology, social media and digital marketing industry.

Alan Rowlands is academy manager at the new 3AAA centre in Prince Street, Bristol, where the first cohort of 14 apprentices have started this week, with a second group set to get under way in July.

“We are hoping that will be a bigger cohort,” said Alan. “We have two training rooms with a capacity for about 28 people in each so we will look to get up to 56 learners on the go.

“In the longer run, Bristol’s a big technology city so there could be potential to expand further.”

Alan, 38, has a small team including an IT trainer, assessor, and a recruitment specialist who will be building relationships with employers. So far they have up to a dozen interested in signing up.

Apprentices can start without an employer on board as part of the course is based in the centre, but Alan says they will be encouraged to be proactive about finding one rather than leave it to the academy.

The academy’s work is government-funded and aimed at 16-23 year olds, from those straight out of school to young people who have gone into further education but decided it’s not for them or those out of work.

Alan, who went into recruitment after ten years at Somerfield, adds: “Ideally they should have at least English and maths at grade C as they need to be at the right level.”

The apprenticeships last 12 months and will be just below a Level 4, which is a Higher National Diploma equivalent.

Nationally, 3AAA – which stands for Aspire, Achieve, Advance – was founded in 2008 and works with a number of employers and colleges around the country.

Its move into Bristol is focusing on the city’s creative and digital market, one of the fastest growing sectors locally.
